Carla Suárez, one of Spain's finest tennis players of the last decade, has been appointed as the new captain of the Billie Jean King Cup team for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. The Gran Canaria native takes over the role following the departure of Anabel Medina in November, who had led the team for the past seven years.
"It is a great honour to take on the captaincy of the Spanish Billie Jean King Cup team, and I thank the Federation for the trust they have placed in me for this challenge. For many years, I had the opportunity to represent the country, and now I face this new stage from the bench with great enthusiasm," said the former player.
Carla retired in 2021 after overcoming Hodgkin's lymphoma, which kept her off the courts for several months and which she overcame in April 2021. After a brief return to competition, which allowed her to play at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the Tokyo Olympics, and the US Open, she concluded her career at the Billie Jean King Cup in a tie against Slovakia.
During her sporting career, Carla won two WTA titles, in Oeiras 2014 and Doha 2016, in addition to reaching nine other finals and making it to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam six times. As a doubles player, she reached four finals, including the WTA Finals alongside Garbiñe Muguruza in 2015. She reached a career-high ranking of number six in February 2016.
"I will try to bring my professional experience to get the best out of our players and ensure that Spain continues to be an example of commitment and collective effort in the competition," she stated.
Carla's debut as captain will take place in the group stage of the Billie Jean King Cup, which will be drawn at the end of this month.
