Expansion works at Calpe's cemetery have commenced this week to enhance the municipal burial ground's facilities and add 111 new niches across four modules, all on a plot adjacent to the newest area.

The project also includes significant aesthetic and functional improvements, such as the creation of green areas with dry stone walls and the installation of a new irrigation system. The work, awarded to Vías y Obras Aitana, is expected to be completed within three months.

"Life teaches us that growth is inevitable, and our municipal cemetery is no exception. With this expansion, which we finally see materialising, we ensure that Calpe can continue to honour the memory of its residents with the dignity they deserve, because the final home should be as welcoming as the first," stated Marco Bittner, the councillor responsible for the Eternal Rest Park.

This initiative, which addresses the town's growing population and current needs, is part of a broader improvement plan: "This project is just the first step on a longer journey. We have new phases planned that will shape our vision of a cemetery that is more than just a place of farewell. We aim to create a space where serenity and beauty invite reflection, where gardens and traditional stone walls help us find peace," added the councillor.

Alongside the cemetery expansion process, the municipal council recently approved an amendment to the Cemetery Ordinance to allow the burial of non-resident family members, a measure that addresses specific needs identified in the town.
