Calp has taken a decisive step in the council's commitment to gender equality. It has established the Working Group for the Feminisation of Public Spaces and drafted a regulation that sets out the principles and procedures for incorporating female figures into the town's street names.
This working group is established as an advisory body to the Equality Unit of the Calp City Council. Its purpose is to provide advisory, non-binding opinions on all matters related to naming public spaces in the municipality after women, as well as to document and propose names of women or women's groups for inclusion in the naming of streets, squares, and other public spaces. The aim is to highlight the role of women in history and society.
The regulation stipulates that the group will consist of the Mayor or the person delegated by the Mayor on Equality issues, who will chair the group; technical staff from the areas of Culture, Geographic Information Systems, Urban Planning, and Equality of the Calp City Council. It will also include a representative from each of the municipal political groups, and another person from each of the local associations whose main objectives include gender equality, the elimination of discrimination between men and women, the promotion of empowerment, and the participation of women.
Furthermore, the regulation provides for the creation of a proposal bank where justified nominations of women or female groups eligible for public recognition can be included. The working group will be responsible for evaluating and ranking these nominations by score. Among the general criteria, preference is given to names of women with ties to Calp, as well as those who have contributed to the feminist movement, the advancement of rights, or have excelled in fields such as science, education, art, or culture.
The so-called "zipper criterion" will also be applied to ensure balanced geographical representation: one woman from the municipality, another from the Valencian Community, another from the national level, and another of international character. Duplications will also be avoided, and traditional local toponymy will be prioritised.
With this initiative, the council reinforces its commitment to effective equality between women and men. It thus promotes the symbolic and social recognition of women through their visibility in public spaces.
