In a context where child poverty remains a reality for thousands of children, the "la Caixa" Foundation reaffirms its commitment to equal opportunities through the CaixaProinfancia programme. Throughout 2024, this project supported a total of 65,845 children and adolescents, as well as 41,849 families across Spain. Since its inception in 2007, it has reached more than 392,000 children and adolescents, and over 227,000 families.
The programme aims to support these children, adolescents, and families in situations of economic poverty and social vulnerability, providing them with the necessary tools to overcome the socio-economic barriers they face and ensuring they can access the same opportunities for growth, education, and well-being as their peers.
In Spain, 1 in 3 children lives in poverty, a reality that directly impacts their personal, educational, and social development. With the goal of breaking the cycle of inherited poverty, CaixaProinfancia promotes comprehensive and personalised support, aimed at improving basic skills, study habits, and self-esteem of participants, thus fostering their empowerment and social inclusion.
"Through this programme, we strive to ensure that no child is left behind. We want all children to grow, learn, and dream of a better future, without their social or economic context being a barrier to achieving their goals. CaixaProinfancia is, ultimately, our commitment to a more equitable and supportive society," stated Marc Simón, Deputy General Director of the "la Caixa" Foundation.
With 18 years of experience in vulnerable environments, CaixaProinfancia offers comprehensive and multidimensional support with activities ranging from educational reinforcement to psychosocial care and family well-being. Its innovative intervention model, based on network collaboration, is deployed throughout Spain, covering 17 autonomous communities, 2 autonomous cities, 148 municipalities, 197 networks, and 467 social entities. These entities collaborate directly in the care and monitoring of families, prioritising assistance according to their needs.
The programme is structured through territorial care networks, promoting collaboration between social entities, local administrations, and other territorial agents (schools, health centres, and social services). This coordination allows for the optimisation of resources and ensures that each child receives the necessary support according to their situation and needs.
The conditions of the environment, health, or family organisation directly influence learning processes, so children and adolescents living in vulnerable contexts face greater difficulties in achieving academic success.
According to the latest CaixaProinfancia Evaluation Report, corresponding to the 2022-2023 academic year, the data reflects the positive impact of the programme, as nearly 90% of participants advanced to the next grade, and the graduation rate in secondary education reached an impressive 82.4%, 31.2% above the national average for students of the same socio-economic stratum.
The programme also focuses on promoting the development of basic skills, improving study habits, autonomy in learning, increasing expectations of success, and boosting academic results and school performance. Additionally, it works to enhance participants' self-esteem, empowerment, and the strengthening of socialisation and social inclusion processes.
The programme employs a methodology that identifies the social vulnerability of participating families and establishes a tailored work plan to meet their needs. A socio-educational accompaniment that gathers information about the family situation both at the programme's entry and during and after the intervention.
CaixaProinfancia has contributed to reducing the levels of social vulnerability of the families it serves, reaffirming the value of education as a driver of change.
