Before raising anchors and setting the sails of the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, Princess Leonor and the rest of the midshipmen are fulfilling their final duties on land before embarking on their journey across the Atlantic to reach America in the coming weeks.
This Friday, just 24 hours before departing from the Cádiz dock, the future Navy officers, along with the Princess of Asturias, entered the San Juan de Dios square in Cádiz to reach the town hall and be welcomed by the city's mayor, Bruno García. "Cádiz, as every year, wishes you fair winds and following seas," the mayor conveyed during a brief ceremony in the assembly hall.
Once again, as is tradition, the municipal corporation has welcomed one by one the 97th class of the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano. "We have all felt at home; it is a pride that Cádiz is the first port of the training cruise," expressed one of the midshipmen on behalf of his companions. "Our relationship with Cádiz is one of the strengths we have; we appreciate the affection the city gives us during these important days, greatly aided by the Bay of Cádiz in our preparation over these months," added the Spanish ship's commander, Luis Carreras-Presas do Campo.
After the official events in the Cádiz capital, Princess Leonor and her companions resumed their agenda on land with cheers, visiting the Carmen Church in San Fernando (Cádiz) and other Navy facilities.
Tomorrow, another of the most anticipated images will occur at the port of Cádiz, reminiscent of the snapshots from the 1980s when her father, King Felipe VI, set sail into the deep Atlantic waters and bid farewell to his parents. Before this historic postcard, the heir to the throne and her companions will attend the traditional mass at the Santo Domingo Convent, followed by a procession with the Virgin of the Rosary, known as 'La Galeona'.
Before setting sail, Midshipman Borbón Ortiz has already retraced the first steps her father took aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano. Leonor has explored the interior, deck, and highest point of the ship.

Now, the travel journal and academic route of her training within the Navy at the Naval School of Marín, in Pontevedra, remain to be completed. The Elcano's navigation chart, with the princess on board, notes visits to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Days later, she will cross the Atlantic to Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), Montevideo (Uruguay), Punta Arenas and Valparaíso (Chile), El Callao (Peru), Panama City, Cartagena de Indias and Santa Marta (Colombia), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). From there, the next stop will be the United States, docking in New York. Leonor will return to Spain by plane from the Big Apple before re-embarking in Gijón, her mother Queen Letizia's homeland. The final date of the journey is set for July 21, precisely in Cádiz.
