The European Commission has initiated a public consultation process, inviting all stakeholders in the automotive sector to submit their views on the future of this industry. This marks the first step towards establishing a new Action Plan, set to be unveiled on March 5th.

The initial meeting, part of the strategic dialogue convened by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, concluded on Thursday without any concrete outcomes. Notably, there was a lack of representation from Stellantis, which did not participate, and the electric vehicle giant Tesla, which was not invited, as the forum was specifically dedicated to the European industry.

Von der Leyen addressed the attendees, acknowledging that "the European automotive industry is at a crucial juncture, and we recognize the challenges it faces. This is why we are acting swiftly to address them. The fundamental question we must answer together is what we still need to unleash the innovative power of our companies and ensure a strong and sustainable automotive sector."

The President's promise is that the action plan emerging from this process "will chart a clear course to ensure our industry can thrive in Europe and compete successfully on a global scale."

Discussions in the first session focused on the need for a "level playing field" internationally, referring to competition from Chinese manufacturers.

For now, Von der Leyen has tasked four commissioners with leading discussions on key topics. Specifically, Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (Dutch, in charge of Climate Action) will focus on the clean transition of the automotive sector.

Stephan Séjourné (French, Industry) will address the industrial value chain. Henna Virkkunen (Finnish, Technological Sovereignty) will oversee discussions on technological and digital innovation, and Roxana Mînzatu (Romanian, Social Affairs) will lead discussions on skills and social considerations within the sector.

All efforts will be coordinated by the Transport Commissioner, Greek Apostoles Tzitzikostas, who will also present the action plan in March.
