One of the most advanced techniques used in the Neurology Unit at Vithas Medimar Hospital is non-invasive brain stimulation. This includes all types of treatments that can influence brain function without needing to touch it, meaning "without having to introduce anything into the brain, no drugs, no metallic devices, nothing," explains Dr. Francisco Mira, the unit's director.
This technology, which includes transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), allows for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases with optimal results. Additionally, it extends to disorders such as chronic anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. Mira highlights the impact of this technique in cases of drug-resistant depression, "when depression does not respond to conventional drugs, or the patient cannot tolerate them, or even does not want to take them, for example, due to their profession, there is a high chance of finding significant benefit in non-invasive brain stimulation techniques."
In the field of neurology, non-invasive brain stimulation has also proven effective in conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. As the specialist explains, "in dementia, it is a very promising treatment that helps stabilize or even improve about forty to fifty percent of patients, and we are talking about sustained improvement, something no drug achieves. We have patients who have been in treatment for several years, remaining stable and even improving in brain metabolism tests," he notes.
The treatment is carried out with the patient fully conscious and comfortable. As Dr. Mira explains, "the patient is conscious, talking with the team staff, comfortable, relaxed, without any problem. The treatment can last from 40 seconds to 37-38 minutes depending on the pathology." In some cases, the patient performs cognitive or physical exercises during the session, which helps enhance the therapy's effects.
