Jessica Bouzas finally broke through. After three attempts at reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam, she succeeded by defeating Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, advancing to the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time in her career.

The Vilagarcía de Arousa native will enter the WTA top 50 for the first time thanks to this result, improving her ranking by twelve positions before the tournament began. She had previously defeated Ella Seidel, who retired due to an ankle injury, Grand Slam winner Sofia Kenin, and now Yastremska, who had earlier defeated Coco Gauff in the first round.

Despite Yastremska's reputation as a dangerous player, Bouzas remained calm and consistent. She only hesitated after the match, unsure whether to celebrate, greet her opponent, or embrace her supporters, who were cheering in the stands of Court 16 at the All England Club.

The Galician completed a rapid match, lasting just an hour and 23 minutes, but it was interrupted for nearly two hours due to rain at 6-1, 0-3. A downpour halted play when Yastremska was at her best, mixing erratic shots with winners. However, the Ukrainian returned from the break unchanged, forcing a third set that exposed her vulnerabilities.

No Mistakes

Bouzas capitalised on a poor service game from Yastremska to break serve and did not lose her own serve throughout the set. Her final set, typically the most nerve-wracking, was conservative with only two winners but nearly flawless in errors—committing just five. Against a player as impatient as Yastremska, it was enough.

Bouzas also becomes the first Spanish woman in history to reach her first Grand Slam fourth round at this tournament and will be ranked fifty at the end of Wimbledon.

The quarter-finals, once a distant dream a week ago before the tournament began, are now just one match away against Russian Liudmila Samsonova, who defeated Daria Kasatkina. The Russian and the Spaniard have not faced each other on the circuit before.
