It was a good day for the Spanish Armada in London. Jessica Bouzas, Pedro Martínez, and Jaume Munar advanced to the second round. Only Roberto Carballés, who faced a tough opponent in Alex de Miñaur, was left behind this Tuesday.
Bouzas, who swapped last year's central court, where she defeated champion Marketa Vondrousova, for one of the outer courts, benefited from Ella Seidel's retirement to secure another victory at Wimbledon a year later.
The player from Pontevedra was clearly dominating her match 6-3, 3-2 when Seidel suffered a fall, twisted her right ankle, and despite trying to continue for a few minutes, had to retire from the match in tears, allowing Bouzas to progress to the next stage of the tournament for the second consecutive year.
To repeat the success of 2024, that is, reaching the third round, she will now have to defeat Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open winner, who beat Garbiñe Muguruza in the final.
In addition to Bouzas, Pedro Martínez won at Wimbledon for the first time since 2021 by defeating local player George Loffhagen, who had been given a wildcard by the organisers, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. The player from Alzira, who celebrated the victory like Ilia Topuria, will face an opponent who had never won on grass until this Tuesday, Argentine Mariano Navone, who surprised 2021 semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov.
Jaume Munar also caused an upset, perhaps one of the biggest of the tournament so far, by defeating one of the circuit's in-form players, Alexander Bublik, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. The Balearic player, who served to avoid losing in the fourth set, progresses to the next round for the fourth consecutive year and will now face Fabian Marozsan, a challenging opponent on fast surfaces.
Roberto Carballés was unable to join the three Spaniards in the second round, as after two months away from the circuit due to injury, he fell to one of the favourites, Alex de Miñaur, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
Unexpected Results
Despite Jannik Sinner, the number one, swiftly defeating Luca Nardi (6-4, 6-3, 6-0), it was a day of surprises at the All England Club.
Lorenzo Musetti, last year's semi-finalist, is still struggling with physical issues from when he retired against Carlos Alcaraz in Paris and fell to a qualifier like Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. However, the biggest shock of the day was caused by Alexander Zverev, who, as the third seed, confirmed that this is his worst Grand Slam - never having progressed past the fourth round - and lost to the number 72, Alexander Rindernech, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4.
The match had to be stopped on Monday due to the Wimbledon curfew, with the score at 1-1 in sets, and upon resumption, Zverev was eliminated, further clearing the path for Alcaraz, who will no longer face him in the semi-finals.
In the women's draw, three 'top ten' players, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Qinwen Zheng, were eliminated, marking an unprecedented culling in the Grand Slams. Between the men's and women's tournaments, eight of the top ten fell, the worst record since the start of the Open Era in 1968.
