Borussia Dortmund has reached the round of 16 in the Champions League. The German team, currently in an unremarkable position in the Bundesliga, sitting eleventh on the table and far from their initial goals, compensates for their domestic disappointment with a ticket among the top 16 teams in Europe, largely secured in the first leg against Sporting Portugal with a 0-3 victory at the José Alvalade Stadium.
The commanding lead brought into the second leg at the Westfalenstadion turned the return match into a goalless stalemate, lacking significant excitement. The leader of the Portuguese league was unable to challenge a fate sealed by the first encounter and was clearly inferior. In fact, they could have fallen again if the Champions League's top scorer, Serhou Guirassy, had not missed a penalty, thus missing the chance to extend his lead as the tournament's top scorer, and if Emre Can's header into the net had not been ruled out due to an offside by the German-Turkish midfielder.
The current runner-up in Europe progresses in the most prestigious tournament despite the sporting challenges of a lacklustre season, which saw Nuri Sahin's tenure as coach end and Niko Kovac's arrival, with interim Mike Tullberg in between. Like the surprising Club Brugge, their potential opponents in the round of 16 include Unai Emery's Aston Villa or Lille.
