The mobile blood bank from the Alicante Transfusion Centre will visit the University of Alicante this Wednesday, operating from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the area of the 'Dibuixar l'espai' sculpture, popularly known as the 'Hand'. This initiative aims to strengthen the solidarity of the university community by facilitating blood donation at various times throughout the year.
According to José Ramón Martínez Riera, director of Healthy University, "the goal is to provide more opportunities for blood donations, in addition to the traditional marathons held twice a year. We want the university community to internalise the importance of donating continuously, not just during specific events."
Martínez Riera explained that the strategy includes interspersing donation days with less logistical deployment, such as those conducted with the mobile bank or in spaces like Aulario 2. "In this way, we expand the possibilities of participating in this much-needed solidarity action," he added.
In 2024, the university community of the University of Alicante made a total of 1,892 blood donations. Of these, 654 were from new donors, while 2,233 people presented themselves to donate.
Blood donation is essential to meet the constant needs of the healthcare system, such as transplants, surgeries, complicated childbirths, traffic accidents, and treatments for serious illnesses like cancer. With initiatives like this, the University of Alicante reinforces its commitment to health and solidarity.
