Black ice on the road is an invisible danger that can lead to serious accidents. Unlike snow, which is easy to spot, ice, especially the so-called "black ice," can go unnoticed and catch drivers by surprise.

Black ice is a transparent and very thin layer of ice that forms on asphalt, particularly on cold and damp days. Its name comes from being almost invisible, as it blends with the colour of the asphalt, making it very dangerous.

According to Subaru, because it is so thin, this layer of ice does not yet reflect light in the way traditional ice sheets do. Black ice can be detected by looking at the edges of the area: there are often small snow pellets.

If the outside temperature is near or below 0°C, there is a high risk of ice forming on the road. Shaded areas, such as bridges and tunnels, cool down faster and are therefore more prone to ice formation.

Elevated areas, such as mountain peaks, are also more susceptible to ice formation. Black ice often gives the asphalt a characteristic shine, similar to that of oil.

At the slightest sign that we are on a patch of ice, we must drive as smoothly as possible, avoiding pressing the brake pedal, which would only hasten the outcome (loss of grip on all four wheels). We should simply remain calm and anticipate probable conditions by adjusting speed to avoid scares, always driving with maximum smoothness.
