The Civil Guard, through the Nature Protection Patrol (Paprona) of Elche, has seized 19 common goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) in an operation aimed at ensuring compliance with administrative and criminal regulations related to the possession and commercialization of pets, wild and exotic animals, according to a statement from the Armed Institute.

The investigation began on December 16th after receiving an anonymous tip-off about the presence of several cages with birds on a street in Elche.

The officers went to the indicated location, near the entrance of a bar, where they confirmed the presence of four cages in the public area, each containing a goldfinch. During the inspection, a local resident admitted to being the owner of the cages and explained that he had left the birds "to sunbathe," a practice among breeders that refers to exposing birds to sunlight to promote their vital development.

Additionally, the officers detected bird songs coming from a nearby premises, also owned by the resident. Upon inspecting the site, they found 30 canaries and 15 goldfinches in various cages.

The common goldfinch is a protected species whose capture and possession are strictly regulated. The owner was asked to prove the legality of the acquisition and possession of the birds, as well as the necessary authorizations issued by the competent authorities. However, he only presented an expired membership card from an ornithological society in the province of Alicante, without providing the required documentation to justify the legality of the protected specimens.

The operation revealed several administrative violations, including not being registered in the Zoological Nuclei Registry or having the necessary administrative authorization to carry out activities related to animal protection; and unjustified capture and pursuit of protected wild fauna species without the corresponding administrative authorization.

As a result, the competent bodies, the Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory of Alicante, and the City Council of Elche have been informed. Additionally, the 19 seized goldfinches have been placed at the disposal of the relevant authorities.
