An 'evolutionary' bicycle that adapts to children aged between 2 and 7 years. This is the original Final Degree Project (TFG) developed by Dolores García, a student from the Alcoi Campus of UPV, which promises to be a practical and economical solution for families. The prototype designed by this student of the Degree in Industrial Design Engineering and Product Development has no pedals and is intended to be produced using the techniques and methods of the industry in the Toy Valley area of Alicante.

Therefore, processes such as plastic injection and metalwork have been incorporated, ensuring the efficiency, quality, and sustainability of the product. The TFG was supervised by Joaquín Pérez, a professor from the Department of Graphic Engineering. The work was considered the best of its degree in the 23/24 academic year, earning a Distinction.

The design aims to offer a practical and economical solution for families, avoiding the need to purchase multiple bicycles as the child grows. It also promotes motor development, balance, and autonomy in children in a progressive and fun way, as explained by UPV, adding that special emphasis has also been placed on aesthetic design, creating a bicycle with bright colors and friendly shapes that are attractive to both children and their parents.

Adaptability and Local Focus

The main difference compared to other similar toys already on the market is its adaptability and local focus. Many current evolutionary bicycles do not cover such a wide age range nor offer such practical transitions between stages. Dolores García's design includes multi-position components and simple adjustments that facilitate the necessary changes to adapt it to the child's growth.

Another distinguishing aspect is the link with local production. Being conceived to be manufactured in the municipalities of the Toy Valley (Onil, Ibi, Castalla…), the design leverages the technical knowledge (know-how) of the area's companies, as well as their highly efficient and high-quality processes. This not only makes it cost-competitive but also reinforces sustainability and promotes the development of the local economy.

Exclusively Developed on Campus

According to the supervisor of this project, in addition to the criteria established to obtain the award for the best TFG of its degree, "it is a comprehensive work in scope and quality, where everything expected of a graduate in Industrial Design Engineering and Product Development has been worked on." The teacher also recalls that the construction of the prototype was carried out within the same facilities of the Alcoi campus, specifically in the Design Workshop, which "adds value."

The creative part, the engineering part, and the industrial part have been addressed. In the creative part, it stands out for the idea that the same bicycle can be used by the same user from 2 to 7 years old. Pérez also highlights the shape of the suspensions, where wheels of various sizes can be assembled.

In the Engineering part, all calculations and element sizing have been done. Finally, in the Industrial part, the evolutionary bicycle has been designed to be manufactured using the industrial techniques of plastic injection and metal transformation, typical of our regions, and utilizing readily available local resources.
