In the early hours of Sunday, October 27, at 3:00 AM (peninsular time), clocks will be set back to 2:00 AM. This marks the start of winter time, with shorter days and less daylight, which affects driving. Not only does it get dark earlier, but the time change also causes sleep disruption, making it less restful. Additionally, problems may arise in falling asleep, daytime drowsiness, and even difficulty concentrating. All of this can lead to fatigue and drowsiness while driving, posing a risk. Moreover, it gets colder, and adverse weather conditions such as rain or wind also affect drivers and their mood.

Therefore, Norauto provides a series of recommendations to cope with this time change while driving. First, try to drive during hours with more natural light. This way, visibility will be less impaired. At night or in case of rain, it is recommended to drive on well-lit roads to ensure driver safety.

Avoid driving in adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog, or strong winds. Whenever possible, it is advisable to postpone driving until the weather improves or opt for public transport as an alternative. Drive with the lights on, even during the day. Newer cars have daytime running lights that turn on automatically. If not, it is recommended to drive with the low beam on throughout the day. Rest and sleep the necessary hours. It is important that sleep is of good quality and restful. This helps prevent drowsiness or fatigue while driving.

Also, frequently check the proper functioning of the vehicle's lighting. Norauto emphasizes the importance of regularly checking that the headlights illuminate properly and that there are no burnt-out lights. They also need to be well-adjusted to avoid dazzling and prevent dirt from accumulating on the headlights, as it interferes with the light they emit. In this regard, as part of maintenance or as a specific review, the optics can be renewed, restoring their clarity, removing scratches, oxidation, and restoring transparency.

Preferably use halogen, xenon, or LED lights. This significantly increases visibility. Of course, they must always be approved lights. Besides keeping the car in good condition and clean. Keep in mind that a dirty car is less visible to other road users as dirt obscures the vehicle.

Similarly, pay special attention to the windshield, windshield washer fluid, and both front and rear wipers. The windows must be clean, as light on a dirty windshield causes glare. Additionally, the wipers must be in good condition to properly remove dirt from the windshield. Do not forget the windshield washer fluid, which is also very necessary, especially if it rains.

Consider blind spots, especially when there are larger vehicles and vulnerable users. These are areas where the driver does not have proper visibility. Blind spots are larger the bigger the vehicle.

Finally, carry the V-16 signal connected in the car. Currently, emergency triangles or the connected V16 can be used in case of a traffic accident, breakdown, or immobilization on the road. However, Norauto advocates for this connected beacon as it offers greater visibility, allows it to be placed without leaving the vehicle, and is also connected to the General Directorate of Traffic. This device will become mandatory in January 2026.
