The breakfast is the most important meal of the day and often overlooked in gastronomy. More establishments are recognising its importance, offering high-quality ingredients, perfectly cooked dishes, and a setting that provides the necessary attention to make the first meal of the day a complete experience. To acknowledge and encourage the efforts of some Spanish hotels in satisfying their guests with the first meal of the day, Madrid Fusión Alimentos de España and Supracafé have highlighted its value at the world's most important gastronomic event in the second edition of the Best Hotel Breakfast Award.
"Breakfasts are important for hotels because they are our first impression and the gastronomic service that 99% of hotel guests experience," said Carlos Hernández, the award presenter. To emphasise hotel breakfasts, this second edition of the award introduced two categories: Grand Hotel and Boutique Hotel. In the first category, the winner was Boho Club in Marbella, surpassing the three finalists: Urban Madrid, Villa Cortés in Tenerife, and Hotel Ercilla in Bilbao.
Diego del Río, executive chef, expressed his happiness about the award as it signifies "we are doing things right." What makes Boho Club's breakfast special? "We offer an honest selection of Andalusian products crafted with care and respect, surrounded by greenery," he added. A buffet breakfast, priced at 35 euros, includes high cuisine suggestions with traditional Mediterranean and international options. "We have freshly baked, crispy, and fluffy bread to taste supreme olive oil, but the most special aspect of our breakfast is the customer service," he boasts, "but if there's something that stands out, it's the fried eggs with truffle and potatoes or the eggs benedict, which we serve with brioche bread and fine butter from France."
In the Boutique Hotel category, the winner was Casa Cacao in Girona, surpassing César in Lanzarote, Cañitas Mayte, and Eurise in Salamanca. Anna Payet, the hotel director and manager, received the award amidst cheers of "brava and beautiful" from Jordi Roca, who joined the audience to celebrate the accolade. "My brother-in-law is the best, and his support is crucial for this project," confessed an emotional Anna Payet, who advocated for good gastronomy in hotels, whether at lunch, dinner, or breakfast.
One of the attractions of Casa Cacao's breakfast, endorsed by the Celler de Can Roca, is the location known as La Terrassa, "with views of Girona's historic area and its colourful houses." The breakfast is always served at the table, not buffet-style, with local and seasonal products. However, two things that make this breakfast stand out are "our seasonal villaroy egg, accompanied by mushrooms and truffle, and the cacao we roast in front of the reception, which fills La Terrassa with its aroma," Anna proudly states. An exclusive breakfast for hotel guests, but available as brunch for those not staying overnight.
Finally, the special Supracafé Award was presented to Castilla Termal for its commitment to sustainability.
