The regulation directly affecting cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, requiring them to implement a Low Emission Zone (LEZ), stems directly from a European Union directive. Therefore, with just three months left before Benidorm enforces these restrictions in January, the celebration of European Mobility Week seemed the logical framework for the tourist capital to launch an information campaign about the implications of this new paradigm for its residents.
And that is precisely what Benidorm's councilor for the area, Francis Muñoz, announced this Monday at the event that kicked off the various activities planned for the coming days.
Muñoz reminded that Benidorm's LEZ affects the first line of its two main beaches, Levante and Poniente, as well as most of the city center and that it will be operational starting in January.
Many residents, workers, and visitors still do not know exactly what to expect once the LEZ begins to be implemented, which is why from today an information point has been set up that will move to various points in the city, with a special presence at access points to the LEZ.
To start, the information point was located this Monday on Jaume I Avenue during the morning and will move in the afternoon to another significantly affected area, such as Mediterranean Avenue, where it will be from 5 PM to 8 PM.
Tomorrow it will be located at l'Hort de Colón from 10 AM to 1 PM in the morning and from 5 PM to 8 PM in the afternoon.
At these information points, interested parties will receive a leaflet with a map of the three subzones into which the tourist capital's LEZ has been divided, detailing each area's surface and entry and exit points.
The first subzone extends along Armada Española Avenue and covers an area of eight hectares. The second occupies the space between L'Aigüera Avenue, Jaume I Avenue, Alcalde José Such Street, Paseo de la Carretera Street, and Herrerías Street for a total area of 35 hectares. Finally, the third comprises 31 hectares of Levante area, Rincón de Loix, and the old town.
The leaflet also explains the specific features of these zones and frequently asked questions users may have.
The Mobility Councilor, Francis Muñoz, emphasized the need to clearly explain the characteristics and objectives of an LEZ as a commitment to sustainable mobility and as proof that "Benidorm is a reference for bringing urban sustainable mobility to the highest level."
As part of Mobility Week, tomorrow Tuesday there will be an activity on 'School Routes' at Sierra Aitana School at nine in the morning and an informative talk on 'Public Transport: Taxis' at Torrejó building at eleven in the morning.
