In Benidorm, the beach season extends throughout the entire year. Mónica Gómez, the Councillor for Beaches in Benidorm, highlights, as June arrives, that the beaches of this tourist capital are the only ones in mainland Spain with lifeguard services available 365 days a year. This, she asserts, is necessary because every day of the year, people are seen on our beaches sunbathing, playing sports, and even swimming. Therefore, the decision to offer this year-round security service is not only necessary but also logical.
However, the services at Benidorm's beaches do undergo changes during peak times. As Gómez explains, from June 1st, as stipulated in the contract with the concessionaires, cleaning, lifeguard, rescue, and security services are increased in terms of personnel numbers. Also, in this sixth month of the year, service hours are extended, and additional services are opened.
Specifically, the area manager explains that from this Sunday, the rescue and lifeguard service extends its hours and operates from ten in the morning to seven in the evening, while in the more vacation-heavy months of July and August, the lifeguards at Benidorm's beaches will provide their services from nine in the morning to eight in the evening.
Mónica Gómez adds that this rescue and lifeguard service will consist of 44 people daily, distributed among the beaches of Levante, Poniente, Mal Pas, Tio Ximo, and Almadraba. Additionally, they are joined by land patrol reinforcements and boats, as well as other personnel in ambulances.
Similarly, the staff in charge of Benidorm's accessible bathing points is also reinforced.
With the arrival of summer (at least in tourism terms), Benidorm's beaches also add other leisure activities so that everyone can enjoy the sand and sea as they please. Beach libraries and play areas in Levante and Poniente play a fundamental role in this. The first of these, Gómez recalls, is open all year except for a few days when it is closed for maintenance work.
The other two, located in the Parc d'Elx and La Cala areas, opened yesterday, Sunday, with hours from Tuesday to Sunday, from eleven in the morning to four in the afternoon.
On Benidorm's beaches, a feature that emerged from needs during the pandemic and has remained is the blue rope, which runs parallel to the Mediterranean shore along the entire Benidorm coastline.
This is, Gómez explains, a blue rope that maintains a distance of six meters from the sea shore, ensuring peaceful walks along the shore without constantly dodging people, jumping over chairs, or inflatable mattresses. It was a well-received measure, and it was later requested to remain.
The increased influx to Benidorm's beaches during the summer months also means an increase in cleaning personnel. During these summer months, they will reach a minimum of 24 people. There will be two cleaning shifts on the three beaches, one in the morning and another at night, with a total of 8 and 16 workers, respectively.
To this team, Gómez explains, mechanical cleaning with tractors and sieves on the shore is added, tasks carried out at dawn, along with cleaning from the sea by the 'Pelicano' boat, which operates 365 days a year, as it is essential for us to keep the beaches clean.
Additionally, the Local Police of Benidorm will also increase their presence on what are considered the crown jewels of the city's tourism, with a total of 32 officers making up the Beach Section, conducting both foot patrols on the sand and using the two quads that were added just a month ago.
