Benidorm

On January 1st, Benidorm, as a city with over 50,000 inhabitants, implemented its Low Emission Zone (LEZ); a regulation stemming from the European Union, aimed at transforming urban mobility across the continent towards more sustainable travel and creating more citizen-friendly urban centres.
Whether the creation of Benidorm's LEZ will result in a decrease in accidents remains to be seen, but what is already a confirmed reality is the more than 2,000 traffic accidents (almost 5.5 per day) in which the Local Police of the Costa Blanca's tourist capital had to intervene throughout 2024.
Quique Tortosa, spokesperson for Benidorm's Local Police, told TodoAlicante that "all these accidents have one thing in common: they were due to not respecting traffic rules" and therefore could have been avoided.
These accidents, beyond the material damage they may cause, have also resulted in a trail of injuries and even fatalities, which are the most painful aspect of them all. Hence, Tortosa emphasized that the Local Police of Benidorm "once again remind all drivers of any vehicle type that respecting traffic signals is crucial" and that doing so could "have prevented 327 minor injuries, 41 serious injuries, and five fatalities" last year.
Diving into the specific causes of these traffic accidents, data from the Local Police of the Costa Blanca's tourist capital shows that 129 of these incidents were due to distractions while driving, making it the most common cause of accidents in the city last year.
A cause that is entirely avoidable, as is the second leading cause, which can also become a crime: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, responsible for 65 documented accidents in the city.
Accidents caused by speeding occurred eleven times, and negligent driving five times. Additionally, as Tortosa adds, "most of the rest are due to not respecting the right of way or not maintaining a safe distance."
Regarding the types of vehicles involved in the most accidents in Benidorm during 2024, motorcycles and mopeds lead the list with 190 incidents, far ahead of trucks (35), personal mobility vehicles (33), buses (28), electric wheelchairs (15), or bicycles (6). Additionally, there were 62 pedestrian run-overs.
