The Benidorm Town Hall has already commenced extraordinary maintenance work at the municipal eco-park, an action outlined in the agreement to transfer the facility to the Consorci Mare waste management body. This agreement, unanimously approved in the last ordinary plenary session, stipulates that the Consortium itself will now take over the management and operation of the site.

To mark the start of the works, the Councillor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, visited the eco-park this morning accompanied by the Councillor for Street Cleaning, Luis Navarro, and the President of Consorci Mare, José Ramón González de Zárate, who is also a councillor in the Benidorm council.

Gómez emphasised that these tasks, which will incur no cost to the Town Hall, are being carried out by the concessionary company FCC and will be completed in approximately two months. "These are improvements included in the agreement, not deficiencies of the site," the councillor pointed out, stressing that the aim is to hand over the eco-park "in perfect condition" to the Consortium.

The project has an estimated budget of 90,000 euros, as announced by González de Zárate. The councillor explained that the works were necessary "to update a site with more than 20 years of history before the official handover to the Consortium."

The planned improvements include the adaptation of access points to ensure accessibility, the installation of a new perimeter wall, the refurbishment of toilets and exterior lighting, as well as work on the unloading areas used by collection trucks, whose transit has damaged some structural elements.

In parallel with these works, in July, Consorci Mare itself will carry out a second phase focused on the digitalisation and computerisation of the eco-park. Thanks to this technological transformation, users from any of the 52 municipalities integrated into the Consortium will be able to use the facilities after an initial registration. This system will allow bonuses to be applied to those who make appropriate use of the service, a measure that will come into effect next year.

"The savings for the city will be significant," stated González de Zárate, who estimated that Benidorm will save between 1.5 and 2 million euros with the new management of the eco-park. Additionally, the waste treatment fee will also be lower for the Consortium.

But the benefits will also extend to the residents. According to the President of the Consortium, citizens will be able to deposit a greater variety of waste types and access direct compensations. "Those who make good use of the eco-parks, both fixed and mobile, will achieve economic advantages," he noted.
