Benidorm

On January 1st, Benidorm will launch its Low Emission Zone (LEZ), marking a significant shift in mobility for the Costa Blanca's tourist capital. This paradigm shift will impact both residents and visitors. In a city where thousands of internal journeys occur daily, along with numerous workers and tourists entering and leaving, the challenge of ensuring clear signage for everyone is substantial.
For this reason, Francis Muñoz, head of the Mobility Department at Benidorm City Council, explained on Thursday that his department is finalizing the implementation of the city's Directional Signage Plan. This document, approved in July, is being installed by the company Impursa.
According to Muñoz, the plan aims to "resolve the signage issues faced by a tourist city like Benidorm, ensuring uniformity and continuity in directional signage, as many users are unfamiliar with the city's road network."
The plan, added the councillor, seeks to prevent the loss of continuity in the routes designed to access various points of interest within the city, "to ensure that urban informational signage does not lose its intended effectiveness." The document includes the installation of 141 new signage posts and 466 new boxes, with the investment cost amounting to 274,054.39 euros.
Francis Muñoz highlighted that the plan was drafted under the supervision of the Engineering Department "with the participation of experts and specialized companies in the sector." Among other aspects, the road hierarchy of the PMUS and the Global Road Safety Plan were considered, along with the 56 points of interest established in Benidorm's Universal Accessibility Plan.
The main corridors were also considered, and the implementation of the Low Emission Zone, planned for the coming year, was taken into account. Lastly, the drafting of this Plan also considered the existence of the Intelligent Signage Plan linked to the city's historical heritage.
Finally, 77 priority points of interest have been determined, along with directional signage towards other municipalities. The selected destinations fall into the following categories: official buildings, funeral centers, educational centers, medical centers, sports centers, transport centers, parks and beaches, zonal destinations, public parking, park-and-ride facilities, and nearby roads or municipalities.
Muñoz explained that "once the destinations of interest to be signposted are identified, the plan conducts a study of the optimal routes for each." He noted that to unify the signage used in road and pedestrian signage, "both have the same format."
