Madrid - Fitur

Benidorm continues to unveil its extensive programme for Fitur. The tourist capital of the Valencian Community has conducted a series of events and presentations this Wednesday, highlighting the 'Tapa Fest' and its title as a Green Pioneer Destination.
In fact, it was during the first day of the fair held at Ifema that Benidorm debuted its title of 'Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2025', recently awarded by the European Commission. The town received this recognition in the category of municipalities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants, rewarding its commitment to shaping "the future of sustainable and innovative tourism".
The town's mayor, Toni Pérez, proudly announced this achievement at the "world's major tourism event". Pérez explained that this marks the beginning of a programme designed to promote this distinction "and to showcase at a European level the milestones and best practices that have earned Benidorm this recognition".
The programme focuses on workshops and events to promote the sustainability of Benidorm's model in Spain and Europe. The town is expected to participate in the Spain Talks organised by Turespaña, where Benidorm will highlight its 9.5 kilometres of pedestrian paths and 130 bike lanes, as well as other sustainability topics related to the posidonia seagrass rooted in the 172 hectares of its bay, which generates 3,600 tonnes of oxygen.

Pérez emphasised that this way "we can showcase the work and commitment of a city and a destination that has protected 60% of its territory and boasts one of the most efficient potable water networks on the planet", while also referencing the 18% reduction in water consumption over the past 25 years despite a 40% increase in population.
A 'bootcamp' will also be held with cities that have preceded Benidorm as a 'Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism' in previous years or have received the 'European Capital of Smart Tourism' recognition, also awarded by the European Community, which this year has been given to Turin in the category of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
On 20th February, the official recognition will be presented with the installation of a commemorative sculpture that will be displayed throughout the year in the city.
