Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) will resume the regular Tram d'Alacant rail service between Hospital de La Vila Joiosa and Benidorm stations this Thursday, June 12, from early morning. The restoration of rail traffic follows the completion of works affecting circulation within the project to duplicate and electrify the track on Line 1 (Luceros-Benidorm), a project with a budget exceeding 40 million euros, co-financed by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
With the reopening of the section, the bus service that has temporarily covered this route between Benidorm and Hospital La Vila stations, with stops at Cala Finestrat, Costera Pastor, and Creueta, and rail links to Luceros and Dénia, will also be discontinued. From June 12, these shuttles will cease operations, fully normalizing rail traffic in the area.
Despite the resumption of service, works on the section between La Vila Joiosa, Finestrat, and Benidorm will continue over the coming months, until the end of the year. However, these activities will no longer impact train circulation between Hospital Vila and Benidorm, allowing for normal service for users.
The project, executed over a 6.23-kilometer route, includes the duplication of the track on the existing platform, the construction of a new viaduct over the Murtal ravine, the installation of new railway superstructure, electrification of the section, as well as various actions to improve drainage, ditches, embankments, and enclosures.
Work is also underway to modernize railway safety and communication facilities, as well as to update obsolete electrical substations. In parallel, the Cala Finestrat and Terra Mítica stops are being refurbished, with improvements in accessibility and technical equipment, and an enhancement of access to the Marina Baixa Hospital from the Hospital Vila stop is planned.
The plan also includes actions to improve landscape integration and sustainable mobility, such as extending the Moralet path from the parking lot north of Benidorm station, to enable a healthy walking route throughout the Moralet park. A pedestrian bridge is planned to connect with the existing greenway in this area.
Finally, FGV and the Benidorm City Council are jointly studying the possibility of implementing tramway integration for the section between Beniardà Avenue and the Intermodal stop, located in front of the bus station, which would allow greater integration of the TRAM into the urban fabric of the city.
