Peking has criticised the US government's decision to ban the sale of connected vehicles incorporating Chinese technology, stating that the alleged national security threat claimed by Washington is unjustified.

The United States announced the measure on Tuesday, which also concerns Russian technology, following a public investigation launched by the Department of Commerce in September.

The announced ban will be implemented progressively, starting in 2027 for vehicles equipped with software and in 2029 for equipment from these countries, as specified by the Department of Commerce.

"Such actions disrupt economic and commercial cooperation between companies and represent typical protectionism and economic coercion," stated Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun. "China firmly opposes this," he emphasised.

"Cars are no longer just steel on wheels; they are computers. They have cameras, microphones, GPS devices, and other internet-connected technologies," explained outgoing Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Tuesday.

The Secretary reaffirmed her decision: "We establish the necessary rules to protect the privacy of Americans and national security by keeping our adversaries away and their ability to manipulate these technologies to access sensitive information," she added.

Currently, no Chinese-connected cars are sold in the United States, although manufacturer BYD sells buses in California that will not be included in the ban.

Some Western manufacturers like Volvo, a Swedish group controlled by China's Geely, as well as Polestar, Buick (from GM), and Lincoln (a Ford subsidiary), sell Chinese-origin vehicles in the US market.

Meanwhile, Tesla, the company of magnate Elon Musk, future minister of the next president Donald Trump, produces electric vehicles in China for export.

"Under the guise of national security, the United States restricts the use of Chinese software and hardware for connected vehicles, as well as entire vehicles, without any factual basis," the spokesperson also expressed at a press conference.
