Barcelona took another step forward in contract renewals on Friday with the extension of Gavi's contract. The young midfielder, whose contract was set to expire in 2026, visited the club's offices and signed an extension until 2030. With this new deal, the club led by Joan Laporta secures a player who was pivotal during Xavi Hernández's tenure and who has recently returned to the high level he displayed before his serious knee injury.
"Culés, I am very happy to renew with the club of my life and I hope we bring you much joy this season," Gavi declared on Friday immediately after signing the new contract with Barcelona. The player from Los Palacios was euphoric following an agreement that was an open secret and marks his second renewal in just two and a half years. Gavi has progressed both on the field and in negotiations. In September 2022, he agreed to a contract until 2026 with a release clause of one billion euros, a figure that remains unchanged after Friday's agreement.
Gavi reached this renewal after overcoming the most challenging moment of his career. On November 19, 2023, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which sidelined him for nearly a year and paused his meteoric rise. The unfortunate injury occurred while he was a key player for Xavi and a fixture in the Spanish national team, with the incident happening during a match against Georgia.
The young midfielder, aged 20, worked separately and returned on October 20 against Sevilla. Since then, Hansi Flick has gradually given him playing time, making him an essential player for the German, who has positioned him as a pivot and, more importantly, as an attacking midfielder. "He is a player who, when I ask him, says he can play in any position. He always gives his all, and I think that's the best answer," praised the German shortly after speaking about the player from Los Palacios.
This performance has not gone unnoticed by Barcelona's sporting management, aware that the contract duration until 2026 could pose a long-term issue if it became protracted. The player's desire was always to continue, as was that of Barcelona, which has been actively working on renewals. Ronald Araujo, Gerard Martín, Pedri, and Gavi have already visited the club's offices, and now the club is focusing on the future of Frenkie de Jong, whose contract ends in 2026, and Lamine Yamal. The young winger turns 18 next summer, and his renewal is crucial for the future of the club led by Joan Laporta.
