Barcelona faced a scare on Saturday against Valladolid but prevailed, moving a step closer to the title. Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, they secured a 2-1 victory at Zorrilla in a match marked by rotations in preparation for the Champions League and an early goal by Iván Sánchez. Trailing, Flick turned to his regulars, and the Catalans completed another comeback with goals from Raphinha and Fermín, putting pressure on Real Madrid and edging closer to a title that continues to take shape slowly.

The match began with too many distractions for Barcelona. It might have been the tense atmosphere at José Zorrilla, frustrated with Ronaldo's management, or perhaps the two upcoming fixtures against Inter, or Flick's message with an unrecognizable lineup. The German coach made nine changes from the Champions League squad, which affected the team's start. The defense struggled to break lines, the midfield lacked control despite Pedri and Gavi's presence, and only debutant Dani Rodríguez seemed lively enough to challenge his opponent repeatedly.

Barcelona was not themselves, and neither was Valladolid the team of this season. Álvaro Rubio's side seemed liberated after confirming relegation and initially outmatched their opponents in intensity. They played deep but were very direct after regaining possession, threatening twice on the break and unsettling the Catalans, who conceded from a deflected shot by Iván Sánchez that spoiled Ter Stegen's return within five minutes.

  • Incidents: Match corresponding to the 34th round of the league, played at the José Zorrilla Stadium in front of 20,000 spectators.

It was a demonstration that Barcelona had not entered the match well, something that would persist throughout the first half. The Catalans settled in the opponent's half and tried to dominate a Valladolid that reduced space, fortified themselves, and surprisingly lived comfortably. Without the fluidity of other days, Barcelona struggled to find Fermín between the lines and only managed to trouble Ferreira through crosses. Pau Víctor, Gavi, and Ansu Fati had the clearest chances but lacked precision or were thwarted by the Portuguese goalkeeper. It was the only threat from a Barcelona side that had to introduce Lamine Yamal for the injured Dani Rodríguez before halftime.

Pivotal Moment

After the restart, Flick stirred things up by bringing on De Jong and Raphinha for Pedri and Ansu Fati. The changes benefitted Barcelona, who widened the pitch thanks to their two most unpredictable wingers, and that's where the story began to turn for a Valladolid that could no longer escape their defensive shell and had to multiply their efforts. Sooner or later, the gaps were going to appear, and it happened with a cross cleared by Ferreira that fell to the worst possible opponent. Raphinha, this year, has the usual power and the opportunism of a player with a star quality. He seized the rebound and scored a crucial goal to start another comeback.

Indeed, Flick's Barcelona has the character of champions. They showed it against Celta, Real Madrid in the Cup, or Inter recently in the Champions League, and it was no different in Valladolid. Gerard Martín delivered a ball to the edge of the area, reminiscent of Jordi Alba, and Fermín appeared to show he is a natural scorer. He finished low and hard, relieving the Catalans, who for the first time breathed easily. From there, Valladolid's legs grew heavy, and Barcelona managed the game to secure the win without too many scares. Gavi left with discomfort, but no one will miss the classic due to bookings, and the Catalans are three points closer to the title.
