Uncertainty resolved. The Popular Party and Vox have reached an agreement, for the second consecutive year, to approve the 2025 budget for the Alicante City Council. Last year, Mayor Luis Barcala's group committed to creating a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) without penalties. Now, among other measures, they agree to strengthen the Support for Motherhood and Anti-Occupation offices and reduce fiscal pressure; specifically, they will alleviate the Property Tax (IBI) collection by 1.1 million in 2026, a figure that will rise to 3.1 million in 2027.

The pact allows Barcala to achieve the goal of having the local accounts approved before the end of 2024. As a result of these negotiations, the budget for the professional career of civil servants will also increase by 500,000 euros, reaching 2.5 million. In other areas, both groups have agreed to increase the repair and maintenance of schools to one million euros and to raise the paving budget from 800,000 euros to two million, as announced by the municipal government on Thursday.

Local Police Vehicle Fleet

Regarding improvements for the Local Police, the "leasing" procedure will be initiated for the renewal of the vehicle fleet, and the project for the reform of the Juan XXIII Police Station will be tendered. The agreed budget will also serve to promote the Benalúa community center, the reform of the Teulada market, and the redevelopment of San Cristóbal square. Additionally, the action in Rabasa for the Civil Guard Command will be resumed, and the completion of the La Torreta park will be promoted, according to the same sources.

Both parties emphasize that next year's budget "places people at the center of political action and continues to advance the urban transformation of the city with investments in all neighborhoods, the improvement of essential public services, and tax relief for citizens." This was highlighted by the mayor, who lamented "the obstacles posed by the central government with the imposition of the spending rule" on local administrations.

"I have to thank Vox for putting all their willingness to reach agreements from the first minute"

Luis Barcala

Mayor of Alicante

"Alicante will have a budget in 2025, and that is always good news because it guarantees institutional stability and the realization and achievement of the city's development goals," Barcala stated. "It is never easy to pass a budget, and that is why I have to thank Vox for putting all their willingness to reach agreements from the first minute," he added.

For her part, Vox spokesperson Carmen Robledillo described the agreement reached with the Popular group as a "great pact" and emphasized their commitment "to people, families, the improvement of neighborhoods, and tax reduction." Both groups will hold "periodic and frequent" meetings to evaluate the implementation of the established commitments, Robledillo stressed.

Maintain Investment Levels

Mayor Barcala emphasized that the 2025 budget "first and foremost considers people; secondly, the improvement of public services; and thirdly, maintaining that level of investment in all neighborhoods that a city like Alicante requires in the 21st century." The mayor once again criticized the government of Pedro Sánchez for imposing the spending rule, "which penalizes municipalities that have balanced accounts, no debts, and have done their homework, unlike the Spanish government, which has a record public debt and spends uncontrollably at the expense of local administrations."

"Vox, even in opposition, is a useful force for the people of Alicante and Alicante itself"

Carmen Robledillo

Vox Spokesperson in the City Council

Robledillo emphasized that the pact with the PP will allow the implementation of Vox's electoral program measures "very positive for the people of Alicante." Among them, she mentions the reduction of the IBI by more than three million euros over the next two years and the reinforcement of the professional career by an additional half a million euros for 2025, as well as the increase of 1.2 million euros in street paving, one million euros for the maintenance of public schools, and the increase in the budget for rental assistance for young people.

At the same time, she emphasizes that the closed negotiation will "complete some of the proposals pending execution for 2024, such as the Juan XXIII police station, leasing for Local Police cars, and the installation of shading in commercial areas." New initiatives will also be addressed, such as the reform of San Cayetano street and the Raval Roig community center, the Benalúa community center, the Plaza América fountain, and the park on Nadadora Carmen Soto street, adds the Vox spokesperson.

Regarding small businesses, Robledillo announced that "the urgent tender for vacant stalls in markets and street markets has been agreed upon, as well as the project for the reform of the Teulada street market."

"This agreement demonstrates that Vox, even in opposition, is a useful political force for the people of Alicante and for Alicante itself, and we show our commitment to continue working in this direction, in accordance with the electoral program voted by more than 21,000 residents in the 2023 elections," concluded the leader of the municipal group.
