The Alicante City Council is making significant strides to update the old yet current General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU), which dates back to 1983. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to modernise it, Alicante has spent the last few decades patching it with partial plans. However, this time it seems promising.

The City Council will present the first part of the PGOU: the Structural General Plan, by launching the public consultation process called 'Alicante, a plan with you' this Monday. Mayor Luis Barcala and Urban Planning Councillor Rocío Gómez will provide information on this process, which is of "vital importance for the city's future," during an informative session on Monday, April 7, at 5 PM, at the municipal building's Puerta Ferrisa auditorium. Representatives from various institutions and administrations, professional associations, neighbourhood associations, and any interested citizens are invited to learn about this process.

On the same day, the public consultation website 'alicanteunplancontigo.es' will be available, offering detailed information about the process and the participation survey, where preliminary studies can also be downloaded.

"We are facing a unique opportunity to decide the future we want for Alicante, and we hope to achieve it with the maximum possible citizen participation," explains Urban Planning Councillor Rocío Gómez. "We need a new General Plan, and we want it to be everyone's plan."

Therefore, the councillor adds, "we invite the people of Alicante to participate in this presentation session and in the workshops that will be held in the coming weeks, as well as to fill out the survey, where they can express their opinions on important issues such as green infrastructure development, mobility design, growth and urban development model, service implementation, and urban regeneration actions."

This preliminary consultation process marks the beginning of the processing of the Structural General Plan (PGE), which is one of the two documents that, along with the Detailed Planning Plan (POP), comprise what was previously known as the General Urban Planning Plan, according to current legislation.

During the presentation session, the preliminary consultation process will be explained, which will be conducted through the citizen survey and participation in three workshops on the following topics: green infrastructure and mobility; growth and urban development; and services and urban regeneration. Additionally, there will be another public presentation session of the preliminary studies.
