Barcala insists on the second runway at the airport and considers the reform "insufficient"
The expansion of Alicante-Elche airport announced this Friday by Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (Aena) has not been without controversy in the province. The mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, has urged the state body to explain "why the proposed space adjustments for the airport meet the needs of the city and province better than the construction of a second runway, which has been demanded by various institutions."
The mayor thus reiterates the necessity of this project over the tender for the drafting of the airport facility's remodeling project announced by the entity, which includes "the adjustment of the terminal area and the movement area."

Through a statement, Barcala expressed that he welcomes any actions "that allow us to expand the capacity of our airport and improve its facilities and services for users." However, he regrets that "the study by the Alicante Chamber of Commerce submitted by the Generalitat Valenciana to the Central Government, which argues the need and convenience of this second infrastructure, has not been considered, as other comparable airports like Málaga already have."
The mayor has recalled that the construction of the second runway at Alicante-Elche airport is backed by a study from the Chamber of Commerce, which estimates 21.2 million passengers by 2030 and an annual income generation of 785 million euros to the provincial GDP with the execution of this new infrastructure for aircraft landing and take-off. "The central government has this study from the Chamber, provided and endorsed by the Generalitat in its day, but has not wanted to consider it," he reiterated.
"Aena presents the adjustment of the terminal spaces and the movement area as an expansion of Alicante-Elche airport," Barcala added. "And we find it insufficient that 20 million euros are allocated to this action compared to the 1.7 billion euros that will be invested in the third runway at El Prat airport in Barcelona," he concluded.
