Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, stated on Wednesday that the City Council is "flying" to hire staff for the Social Action area "as quickly as possible" to ensure this service, "provided by the Generalitat," is not disrupted.
He made these remarks to the media after a meeting with the presidents of the management and modernization entities (EGM) in Las Atalayas, when asked about the end of the workers' contracts in these municipal offices at the end of the year.
"When the Botànic was in charge, the program contract was done annually, and we were not allowed to hire before April or May. We spent up to six months a year without enough staff. The last thing done was, instead of annually, for a period of three years," he recalled.

Barcala noted that the City Council received certification on January 8 to begin hiring staff and emphasized that this service is offered with jobs "paid by the Generalitat," but "progressively" the workforce will be expanded with public employment offers and positions through competition.
"Europe and our auditor, in particular, have warned that we should not promote access to public service through temporary contracts," the mayor concluded.
In response to these statements, the PSPV spokesperson in the council, Ana Barceló, accused Barcala of "neglecting responsibility in Social Services, ignoring that, even though it is an improper competence, the situation families face in the city should be of interest to those in power."
"Avoiding problems is part of Barcala and the PP's DNA. The situation we face in the city with the lack of attention to issues affecting Alicante families is indeed the mayor's responsibility. Failing to address it and not demanding the Generalitat resolve the problem caused by its incompetence is admitting that the problems of the most vulnerable citizens do not matter," Barceló added in statements distributed by the socialist municipal group.
