Paula Badosa has now reached the quarterfinals in two consecutive Grand Slams, making it to the last eight. The Catalan player defeated Olga Danilovic 6-1, 7-6 (2) to secure her spot in the Australian Open quarterfinals for the first time in her career.
"I'm in a very good rhythm," the Spaniard asserted. "I've been playing a lot of matches since the middle of last year, and I think I'm one of the players who has been winning the most matches, so I believe the confidence is there."
And she is not wrong. Since Wimbledon, when her chronic back issues completely disappeared, she has won 28 matches and lost seven. This marks the third time in her life she has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, following Roland Garros 2021 and the US Open 2024. With this result, she is assured of returning to the WTA top 10 for the first time since 2022.

Her opponent will be one of the best players on the circuit, as is expected at this stage, the American Coco Gauff. The third-ranked WTA player came back to defeat Belinda Bencic (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) and returns to the Australian Open quarterfinals a year after reaching the semifinals. Their head-to-head is tied at three wins each. While Badosa triumphed in Indian Wells 2021, San Jose 2022, and Madrid 2023, the American won in Doha 2022, Rome 2024, and Beijing 2024. This will be their first Grand Slam encounter.
"I think Coco is one of the best in the world mentally, so I think she's a great competitor. The mental battle is going to be tough, as it always has been with her," Badosa acknowledged, who will debut this year on the Rod Laver Arena's central court.
The day wasn't entirely successful for Spanish interests as Alejandro Davidovich, after two consecutive five-set comebacks, ran out of steam against Tommy Paul (6-1, 6-1, 6-1). The Malaga native, who had come back from two sets down against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jakub Mensik, showed signs of physical problems throughout the match and could only last an hour and twenty minutes before losing to Paul.
The result will help Davidovich climb seven places in the rankings, placing him at number 59 in the world, a significant change for gaining direct entry into all the Masters 1000 tournaments.
