The supply of second-hand motorcycles increased by 4.9% in 2024. This growth is very similar to the previous year, confirming a steady upward trend in recent times.
The increase in supply occurred in all regions of Spain except for three: Cantabria (-12.5%), Extremadura (-8.8%), and Madrid (-4.7%). On the other hand, the most notable increases were in the islands, with the Balearic Islands at 36.8% and the Canary Islands at 32.1%. Other regions like Andalusia (17.9%), Murcia (17.1%), and Aragon (12.5%) also saw double-digit growth, albeit more moderately.
Second-hand motorcycles are gaining significance in the sales market, becoming an increasingly valued alternative for solving mobility issues in cities.
According to José María Riaño, the Secretary General of ANESDOR, "the motorcycle is an ally for mobility, as evidenced by the sector's growth data, both for new and second-hand vehicles. Citizens are increasingly aware of all the advantages they offer. However, motorcycles over 10 years old still represent nearly 50% of the market (49.4%), and mopeds over 10 years old account for 82.6%, which raises concerns regarding safety, as these vehicles lack the latest technological advancements, and environmental impact. To achieve safe and sustainable mobility, a rejuvenation of the fleet is necessary."
In 2024, 723,253 motorcycles were sold, a 5.7% increase. Of these, 475,326 were second-hand, compared to 247,927 new ones. This means that for every new motorcycle sold, almost twice as many second-hand motorcycles were sold.
In this context, the average offer price of second-hand motorcycles closed 2024 with a 1.2% increase, reaching an average of €6,902, according to the annual barometer by Anesdor and Motos.net. This is the highest price ever reached by second-hand two-wheelers in our country. This increase coincides with the sales trend of both new and second-hand motorcycles.
Looking at the increase in offer prices that has been recorded over the past few years, the significant rise in recent years is noteworthy. Specifically, the price has increased by more than 30% in just five years, as in January 2020, acquiring a second-hand motorcycle cost an average of €5,300, almost €2,000 less than today.
However, the average offer price of motorcycles varies depending on the region. The region with the highest absolute price is the Canary Islands (€7,867), followed by the Basque Country (€7,526) and Murcia (€7,494). On the other hand, Navarra (€6,190) and Aragon (€6,383) have the lowest offer prices.
According to Anesdor data, out of the total 723,253 motorcycles sold, 93,674 were mopeds (+0.8%), while 613,431 were motorcycles, with a growth of 6.6%. Tricycles and quadricycles sold in 2024 amounted to 16,148 units (+2.8%).
The regions with the highest sales in 2024 were, in order, Andalusia, with a total of 152,241 units (+6.6%), followed by Catalonia with 145,915 units (+4.5%), and the Valencian Community with 83,235 units (+9.3%), closely followed by Madrid with 75,253 units (+5.6%).
Regarding motorcycle displacement, the most sold by far are those between 51 and 125 cc, with 256,366 units sold, both new and second-hand. They are followed by those between 126 and 500 cc, which accounted for 123,498 units, and those between 501 and 750 cc, which accounted for 104,749 units. However, the ones that have increased their sales the most percentage-wise are those between 751 and 1000 cc, with 65,985 units sold, growing by 14.6% compared to 2023.
By displacement, there is a greater increase among higher displacement motorcycles: those in the 751-1000cc range sold nearly 40,000 units, representing a 7.3% increase compared to the previous year. Those over 1000cc also recorded an increase, in this case of 5.4%, while those between 126 cc and 500 cc also rose by 5.1% compared to 2023. In terms of usage type, the most sold are scooters: 158,407 units (+4.4%), followed by road motorcycles with 149,542 units in 2024 (+1.7%). The ones with the highest increase are off-road motorcycles, with a 9% increase, although they have the lowest market share, with 71,807 units.
In terms of age, the motorcycles that grew the most are those 9 years old (+19.84%), followed by those 8 years old (+17.72%) and those 5 years old (+13.13%). However, those over 10 years old fell by 0.8%. The three best-selling models in the second-hand market in 2024 were the Honda PCX 125, Yamaha T-MAX 500, and KYMCO Agility City 125.
By region, it is noted that in all except the Basque Country, sales increased in 2024 compared to the previous year. The Autonomous Community with the most second-hand motorcycle sales was Catalonia: 82,402 units (+2%). On the other hand, Cantabria had 4,314 second-hand motorcycles sold, with an increase of 0.5%.
When analysing second-hand moped sales, it is noted that the figures are also higher than in 2023. In the past year, 80,211 transactions were made, representing a 2.5% increase, with March, May, June, November, and December being the only months with negative figures compared to the previous year.
