September is usually warm in the province of Alicante. In fact, summer increasingly extends into the end of this month, with high temperatures sometimes reminiscent of the heat more typical of August and July.
Therefore, it is surprising that after an "extremely hot" summer and several consecutive years recording the highest average temperatures of the century, autumn has arrived early. This is confirmed by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which highlights that since last Friday "we have experienced a significant drop in temperatures" in the Comunitat and the province of Alicante.
Indeed, last weekend's predominant weather, especially in inland and mountainous areas, was "autumnal," with average temperatures about 3 degrees below normal for mid-September, equivalent to a day in the first week of October.
According to Aemet, in recent days, average temperatures have hovered between 18 and 19 degrees, whereas a week ago they were above 22 degrees. The drop in minimum temperatures has been even more pronounced, making the weather resemble mid-October.
In recent days, thermometers have recorded up to four degrees less than the "normal" minimums for this time of year, approaching 10 degrees in some localities late at night. These figures are expected to continue throughout this week.
Aemet forecasts that "we will continue with an autumnal atmosphere all week, with temperatures clearly below the normal average for this time of year." The average temperature for this week and next is not expected to exceed 22 degrees across the Comunitat and the province.
Weather forecasts also show low temperatures in more inland and mountainous areas of the province, such as Onil, Alcoi, or Ibi, which will have minimums of 12 degrees on some days and maximums between 20 and 24 degrees.
Aemet warns that "in addition to the cool weather, the week will be unstable." Although this instability will be more pronounced in the northern part of the Comunitat, it will manifest as rain in the province of Alicante.
The "cold low that has been situated in Central Europe will move towards the Mediterranean; although it will be far from our territory, passing troughs and vortices generated by the storm will destabilize the atmosphere," explains Aemet.
It is expected that showers caused by maritime instability will affect coastal areas, being particularly strong in Castellón. Nevertheless, showers are expected throughout the week in the province, with the first drops on Tuesday and precipitation from Wednesday to Sunday.
