Automotive Leasing Grows by 13% in 2024, with 335,530 Transactions

Automotive leasing for cars, industrial vehicles, agricultural vehicles, and SUVs recorded 335,530 transactions by the end of 2024, marking a 13% increase compared to the previous year, according to figures released by the Spanish Association of Leasing and Renting (AELR).

This association explains that these figures mean that approximately one in four vehicles - 24.2% - registered in Spain over the past twelve months were leased.

By propulsion type, 130,311 diesel vehicles were registered under leasing in 2024, representing 38.8% of the total acquired in this sector. Meanwhile, petrol vehicles registered amounted to 191,082, making up 56.9% of the total.

The segment of electric cars, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and compressed natural gas vehicles collectively represented 4.2% of the total in leasing, reaching 14,133 vehicles. Within this category, electric vehicles were the most sold - 11,063 units - accounting for 3.3% of the total leasing.

The AELR details that the automotive leasing business in the Community of Madrid recorded 29,316 transactions in December, a figure 24.3% higher than the same month in 2023. In Catalonia, 2,802 transactions were signed last month, 4.3% more than in the same month of the previous year.

By segments, the AELR highlights that until December, car leasing increased by 13.3% year-on-year, reaching 264,971 signed transactions. Additionally, 55,607 vans were leased, a 15.1% year-on-year increase.

On the other hand, 9,324 SUV leasing transactions were signed, with a 6.1% year-on-year decrease. Likewise, leasing contracts for trucks totalled 4,207 transactions, a 37.8% increase, while agricultural leasing mobilised 1,618 transactions, a 14.2% decrease.

"We trust that the year now beginning will be good for the sector, and we can achieve growth forecasts at least as favourable as those of 2024," stated the president of the AELR, José Coronel de Palma y Martínez-Agulló.

By brands, Volkswagen was the brand that registered the most vehicles through leasing in December - 2,511 units - an 11.9% increase compared to the same month in 2023.

Regarding registrations, including both new and used vehicles, December saw 136,095, a 25.1% increase compared to the same month a year ago.
