Attack on Dénia Castle: Car Crashes Through Gate, Crosses Pedestrian Tunnel, and Descends Stairs

On a night of chaos that spiralled out of control in Dénia, what could have been a simple car journey turned into an assault on heritage, specifically targeting the city's castle.

A car, with a couple on board, burst into the pedestrian tunnel beneath the fortress in the early hours. Investigating officers have timed the incident at 4:30 a.m. this Sunday, with further details in the report.

Among these details is the destruction of the Ronda de les Muralles gate, which the vehicle knocked down to access the tunnel. Far from stopping, the driver pressed on.

The car ventured through the tunnel, despite its narrowness, causing damage to the walls and other elements of the pedestrian passage, as well as scratches and dents on the vehicle's bodywork.

Instead of stopping to assess the damage, the driver continued forward, exiting the tunnel towards Plaza del Consell and Calle La Mar, where a flight of stairs is located.

Given the circumstances, it seemed the car could withstand one last impact. Thus, it descended the stairs, tumbling until it was far from the scene.

However, the escapade left debris, such as car parts scattered both inside the tunnel and on the stairs, along with more damage in Dénia's urban area.

Dénia's Local Police conducted various searches in the attack areas to locate the vehicle, initially without success. Consequently, they reviewed footage from commercial cameras to gather more information about the car and its occupants.

Upon finding the vehicle, officers noted that a man and a woman were inside. A report was filed as the driver refused to take a breathalyser test.
