Pivotal step for Unai Emery's Aston Villa towards the Champions League quarter-finals. The team carries a two-goal advantage back to Birmingham, courtesy of a Belgian own goal and Asensio's penalty in the final stages of a balanced match. Club Brugge, who surprisingly ousted Atalanta in the playoffs, impressed in the first half, even recovering from Leon Bailey's early goal. The Flemish side soon equalised the first leg through Maxim de Cuyper.
Following the initial back-and-forth, the Belgians managed to level a lively first half, which saw an exchange of chances that left Unai Emery's Villa somewhat dissatisfied, despite being the favourites on paper. Indeed, Dibu Martínez played a crucial role, thwarting Talbi's clear opportunity as the Argentine goalkeeper stood firm.
The halftime break did not alter the match's dynamics, with Villa's ineffective pressing and Dibu once again denying Brugge's second goal from Onyedika's shot. Emery remained unconvinced, making an unusual quadruple substitution, taking Rashford off and bringing Marco Asensio on. The Mallorcan was denied by Mignolet with a close-range strike, just before Vanaken's slightly off-target header in a wildly chaotic final stretch.
Tzolis also came close to scoring for Brugge, who at times outperformed their opponents and showcased their ability to challenge Aston Villa in a balanced duel. However, the Belgian side's missed opportunities proved costly, with a cruel and unfortunate own goal by Mechele. The punishment, already severe, was compounded by Tzolis's clear yet unnecessary penalty, converted by Asensio, leaving the tie virtually decided.
