In the early hours, the National Police arrested a 60-year-old Spanish man for allegedly murdering his ex-partner, a 29-year-old Paraguayan woman.
According to initial reports, the young woman visited the residence of the arrested man, who had a restraining order against him for gender-based violence towards her for several weeks, in Madrid's Usera district.
Following their early morning encounter, a dispute ensued during which the man, identified as Marcelino A., fatally slit the throat of his ex-wife, Diana Marisol, and stabbed her in the armpit. The emergency services from Madrid's 112 could only confirm the young woman's death.
After the murder, the alleged perpetrator fled the crime scene but was later apprehended nearby by National Police officers in collaboration with members of Madrid's municipal guard.
Pending confirmation as a gender-based violence attack, the number of women murdered in such cases in 2024 rises to 45, and 1,290 since 2003, with the number of orphans reaching 35 in 2024 and 468 since 2013.
Just last Sunday, December 29, marked two decades since the publication in the Official State Gazette (BOE) of the Organic Law on Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence. According to Interior Ministry data, gender-based violence murders have decreased by 29% since 2004.
This morning's murder adds to two attacks that occurred early Sunday evening. In Marbella, the National Police arrested a 46-year-old man for attempted homicide after allegedly throwing a 32-year-old woman he had casual relations with from a fourth-floor window.
Hours earlier, a 40-year-old man was detained after attacking his ex-partner and her boyfriend with a knife at number 9 in Madrid's San Blas neighborhood.
The attacker, who had a restraining order against his ex-partner, arrived at the woman's residence with a knife and knocked on the door. Upon opening, he lunged at his 56-year-old ex-girlfriend, stabbing her multiple times, according to Samur sources. Both victims were taken to two hospitals in the capital with undetermined prognoses.
