Around half a million people have participated during this Christmas in more than 150 activities organized by the Elche City Council throughout the municipality, aimed at all ages. These were "crowded, safe, and emotional" festivities, according to the mayor, Pablo Ruz.
A month of celebrations highlighted by the large attendance at the Three Kings Parade (65,000 people), the Cantó Race on December 28 (60,000), the Santa Claus Parade (50,000), and the Christmas lighting ceremony (15,000) as the most attended activities. Ruz also mentioned the great influx of people who visited the Royal Camp in Torre Vaillo from January 3 to 5, the concerts in Plaza de Baix throughout Christmas, and the more than 100,000 people who have visited the Glorieta Nativity scene so far.
Ruz also praised the exemplary work of the Security Forces, especially the Elche Local Police, with more than 3,600 officers working during Christmas and nearly half a thousand in special operations such as New Year's Eve, the Parade, or the Coming of the Virgin. During these dates, surveillance in shops and visits to leisure places where parties were held were intensified, in addition to traffic controls with more than 1,400 breathalyzer tests and 33 drug tests.
On the other hand, he referred to the impact of these festivities on tourism, with a 9.5% increase in national and foreign tourists and more than 7,500 visitors have passed through the tourist offices. Most came from the Valencian Community, Murcia, Madrid, Catalonia, or Navarra, while foreigners were from France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Germany.
In the commercial area, the mayor highlighted the positive feelings among merchants and hoteliers about the Christmas campaign, with the success of the consumption vouchers, which had an impact of over 3 million euros. In this regard, he also mentioned the commitment to free urban buses on December 21, 22, 23, and 24, as well as January 3, 4, and 5, with services to the Royal Camp in Torre Vaillo. "The number of users on those dates increased by 15%," he indicated.
Meanwhile, the commissioner of the Local Police, José Eugenio Medina, stated that "these have been festivities with great attendance, but very safe as there were few incidents thanks to the civic behavior of the citizens, as well as the effort made by the security forces who identified 3,800 people with the aim of protecting the citizens."
According to the Councillor for Festivities, Inma Mora, "these have been one of the happiest and most exciting Christmases for the people of Elche," and she wanted to thank the commitment of all municipal departments, cultural and social entities, educational centers, and musical groups.
