Arenales del Sol has once again become a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. A specimen of this species laid 79 eggs on the Elche coast in the early hours of Thursday to Friday. The animal was spotted by a group of young people who were in the area at the time and called 112.
Specialists performed an ultrasound on the turtle. It was observed that the animal still had more eggs inside, suggesting it might return to lay more in a few weeks. For this reason, a satellite tracker was attached to the turtle to anticipate if it returns to our beaches.
In total, the animal laid 79 eggs. Of these, 70 have been moved to the fenced artificial nest on the Carabassí beach. The remaining nine have been sent to the incubators at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia.
This marks the second turtle nesting on the province's beaches. The previous one occurred in June on a Dénia beach. This same turtle had done so three more times last year, laying 116 eggs on this occasion.
Once again, it is evident that the province's beaches are favoured by these animals. Last year, more than 400 eggs were counted along the Alicante coast. Of these, over 300 were on beaches in Elche and Torrevieja.
The Oceanogràfic Foundation reminds us of the importance of not interfering with nesting processes and to call 112 upon any sightings, to activate the protection protocol and ensure both the viability of the eggs and the animal's well-being.
