Alicante has a concentration of two holiday apartments for every 100 residents, still far from other cities similar to the capital of the Costa Blanca, where the proliferation of this type of accommodation has been much greater. Nevertheless, the city has experienced significant growth in recent years.
The number of holiday apartments has increased by almost 23% from one year to the next, reaching 4,108 registered and approved tourist accommodations in the Generalitat, according to data from the 'Technical Study on Tourist Accommodation' prepared by the Alicante City Council.
The study indicates that most census sections show a range of between 0 and 4 holiday apartments for every 100 homes. However, there are three areas with a high concentration of this type of holiday accommodation. The city centre has the highest concentration, with values reaching four per 100.
In the case of the old town and the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, the number rises to one in every five homes, meaning 20% of the flats are for tourist use. Other areas in the centre also face high pressure, with values rising to 8 out of every 100.
San Juan Beach also has a higher concentration than most areas of Alicante, with four holiday apartments for every 100 homes, with areas on the front line, at the level of Holland Avenue and Scandinavian Countries, where the concentration rises to six holiday apartments.
In the case of plazas, in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, the number ranges from 73.5 places per 100 inhabitants to 95 in some areas closer to the port of Alicante. In San Juan Beach, in the most stressed area, the places soar to 25 per 100 inhabitants.
