Elche seems to be blessed. They already won a few weeks ago in Córdoba with a goal by Rashani in the 89th minute, and now they have done it in the same manner in Burgos with Buenos Aires native Nico Fernández as the protagonist. A victory that puts pressure on Levante and Racing de Santander tomorrow and keeps Eder Sarabia's team as the main favourites for direct promotion to La Liga.
Josan Fernández has been the architect of these two last-minute away victories with two great crosses from the wing. In Córdoba, it was from the right, and this Saturday in Burgos, it was from the left. The Alicante native continues to be a quality substitute for Sarabia in the second halves, and at El Plantío, he only needed five minutes to make a difference.
The match was evenly contested, and Elche could have even gone into the break trailing. First, Dituro saved a one-on-one with Álex Sancris, and shortly after, a last-ditch defensive action by John Chetauya prevented Fer Niño's goal.
Elche could have also conceded from a loss by Aleix Febas. The cross from the right side almost resulted in an own goal by Austrian Affengruber. Fortunately, the ball grazed the crossbar under Dituro's resigned gaze.
Elche had their best chance in the second half when Germán Valera shot from outside the box with his left foot, and the ball hit the crossbar.
Finally, as the match seemed to be heading for a draw, Josan's play and Nico's header into the back of the net emerged.
Elche arrives with high morale for the decisive clash next weekend against Levante at the Martínez Valero. Right now, they are five points ahead of Racing and Levante, although it is likely that both will return to within two points of the Elche team today, as they face the already relegated Cartagena and Tenerife, respectively.
