The Alicante City Council is joining forces to urge the Government to create a new sandy beach in Albufereta and reorganize the coastal strip of Serra Grossa, with the possibility of constructing a coastal promenade connecting Alicante and Albufereta. The municipal plenary session in January will approve a joint institutional declaration by PP, PSOE, Vox, and Compromís (the spokesperson for EU-Podem, Manolo Copé, will be on paternity leave) in which they call on the central Government to carry out improvement and protection works on the maritime front between the port of Alicante and Albufereta, in the area known as the Ensenada de Alicante.

The municipal groups agree to demand that Pedro Sánchez's Government implement the recommendations included in the report 'Order of the coastal front of the Ensenada de la Albufereta: Coastal section between Alicante and Albufereta', prepared in 2021 by the Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (Cedex). This public body is attached to the Ministry of Transport.

This project organizes the breakwaters (with the reinforcement of breakwaters 1 and 6 and the removal of breakwaters 2 to 5) and creates a new sandy area in front of the Helios and Rocafel buildings, between 30 and 55 meters wide.

Specifically, in the Rocafel building, it eliminates or relocates the current tennis courts, swimming pool, parking lots, and coastal road. Meanwhile, in the section in front of the Torre Alacant and Alacant II buildings, the reinforcement of breakwaters 6 and 8 is planned, as well as the replacement of breakwater 7 with an island and the dumping of sand.

This entire urban restructuring will allow the creation of a walkway connecting Alicante and Albufereta, which would continue a 14-kilometer coastal promenade between Urbanova and Albufereta, making it the longest in Europe.

This proposal has been agreed upon with the Serra Grossa-Albufereta Neighborhood Association, which has conveyed the general support of the area's residents for the improvement proposals.

Joint Declaration

The joint declaration recalls that Alicante "is among the last places in terms of state investment per inhabitant" and points out that "the materialization of the Cedex report proposals would help correct this investment deficit and convey a positive image of collaboration between the different public administrations to the citizens."

Since the actions foreseen in the Cedex report exceed municipal competences, as they concern the public maritime-terrestrial domain, "State initiative is essential," the proponents explain. In any case, the City Council expresses "the best willingness to collaborate with the State Coastal Administration to remove any obstacles that may arise, as we have been doing in recent years," they note.

It is a very "opportune" moment to develop this project, as the Government is still in time to finance the initiative with European funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. The execution of this project "will benefit the people of Alicante, improving the quality of life and promoting sustainable and equitable growth," the promoters of the institutional declaration consider.

For all these reasons, they propose urging the Government of Spain to "draft and execute, as soon as possible, the proposals included in the Cedex report 'Order of the coastal front of the Ensenada de la Albufereta: Coastal section between Alicante and Albufereta', complying with the quality and efficiency standards required for the comprehensive development of the city of Alicante." They also call on the Government of Spain to "present a detailed and realistic schedule that ensures transparency at each stage of the drafting and execution of the project, ensuring that deadlines are met and that the public is adequately informed of progress." Additionally, they urge the Generalitat Valenciana to express its support for the drafting and execution of the works mentioned in this initiative.
