Alicante adapts the artificial turf of the La Cigüeña football field in El Palmeral for field hockey practice, addressing the needs of the city's clubs. The municipal governing body has revised the construction project of this sports facility located in the San Gabriel neighborhood to accommodate this new sport. The contract increases by 96,000 euros to a final total of 607,500 euros.
Additionally, the artificial turf for hockey is shorter and requires more drainage, necessitating modifications to the original project. Initially, it was proposed to also accommodate top-tier national rugby, but there was insufficient space to expand the facility's dimensions to meet the Federation's requirements. Rugby has been relocated to the Juan Antonio Samaranch sports complex, which meets those standards.
Regarding the clubs using this facility, during the construction period, they will be relocated to the nearest sports facilities, such as Samaranch and Florida-Babel, as was done with the recent renovation of the Tómbola and Garbinet fields and with other municipal facilities.
"The aim of this modification is to adapt the artificial turf facility to meet the demand for training and playing fields requested by the city's field hockey clubs," explained Infrastructure Councillor Cristina García.
