Aguas de Alicante begins the year with the development of three major projects to detect and control wastewater discharges in the city's sewer system. The joint venture, composed of Hidraqua and the City Council, is working within the PERTE Digitalisation framework to advance the city's goal of reusing treated water as part of the 'Alicante Circular Water' initiative.

With this, Aguas de Alicante addresses the issue of saline water intrusion from the subsoil into the sewer networks. This is a significant phenomenon in the city's lower areas, where the water table may already be near the surface.

The impact of this extreme flow added to the wastewater is "especially harmful" in the city of Alicante. Therefore, water reuse is a "fundamental resource," as conventional treatments for its regeneration "cannot reduce salinity," hindering its use for agricultural irrigation or green areas.

Thus, the first project by Aguas de Alicante will create a total of seven Advanced Industrial Discharge Control stations and 18 saline infiltration monitoring stations in the sewer system, with a budget of 827,263.31 euros.

In its second project, Aguas de Alicante will launch a monitoring platform for wastewater, event detection, and location of discharge and infiltration sources, with a budget of 197,888.94 euros.

The third major project includes a complementary improvement action inside several collectors in Alicante, achieving a reduction in saline water contributions. Its investment will be 403,808.51 euros.

These three actions, with a total budget of 1,428,961 euros, will allow Aguas de Alicante to progress in the correct management of the integral water cycle in the field of prevention, with adequate control of discharges in the sanitation network, for subsequent treatment at the treatment plant and return to the natural environment in optimal conditions.

Thanks to these initial projects, obtaining European funds through the PERTE Digitalisation of Water will allow the city of Alicante to advance towards the goal of 100% reuse of treated water pursued with 'Alicante Circular Water,' a project with a strong environmental focus that also aims to achieve zero discharge into coastal waters.

The three projects are among the 18 that make up the 'Comprehensive Digitalisation Plan of Aguas de Alicante,' with a total budget of 6,207,303.63 euros. The joint venture will receive 84% funding from the second call of the PERTE Digitalisation of Water, co-financing the remaining amount within its annual Investment Plan.

The overall proposal aims to modernise the sensorisation of infrastructures, optimising data exploitation with efficiency and sustainability criteria; preserve water resources; and reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Advances associated with PERTE

Aguas de Alicante is advancing in the administrative development that entails an award of the magnitude of the PERTE Digitalisation of Water, with a budget of 6.2 million euros. Thus, the project's planning has been updated according to the new deadlines resulting from the resolution of the second call.

Regarding the first associated tenders, 11% are already in the completed phase; 15% have already been published on the contracting platform; 15% are in the preparation phase, and 59% are in the planning phase, with a deadline for completing all tenders set for April 2025.

Additionally, the company already has a specific interlocutor from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. Furthermore, internal coordination and planning sessions are being conducted for the entire company staff, contributing to the project's agile coordination and progress.
