The Alicante-based company Tera Batteries has launched the first tool to evaluate second-hand electric car batteries. The software applies an algorithm that considers various factors such as vehicle model, manufacturing date, and battery condition, among others.

Thus, the company has developed this pioneering tool available on their website. The aim is to standardise the aftermarket sector for electric cars by defining valuation criteria and a reference price.

The algorithm takes into account the type of car (hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric), battery chemistry, vehicle brand and model, mileage, manufacturing date, battery capacity, or if it has been in an accident.

Tera's CEO and founder, David Santiago, emphasised that "the evolution of the electric vehicle market demands solutions that build trust for both users and industry professionals," and assures that this tool "reinforces our commitment to more accessible, efficient, and sustainable electric mobility."

The company details that this tool was made possible thanks to "years of experience working with a wide range of lithium traction batteries from various manufacturers." For Tera, the knowledge gained about the different states of battery degradation "has enabled the development of this unique capability to accurately and precisely assess the value of batteries in the market."

Over time, these batteries undergo a degradation process that reduces their storage capacity and range. Factors such as temperature, charge and discharge cycles, and the type of vehicle use influence the speed at which they lose efficiency and, consequently, their value.
