Alicante province has kicked off the summer in the best possible way. June ends with the creation of nearly 7,500 jobs and a new record number of Social Security affiliates, with around 776,000 contributors, the highest figure, surpassing May's numbers.

With 775,909 affiliates, this is the highest figure in the historical series, surpassing last month by 7,500 contributors and nearly 20,000 more than the same month last year, according to data from the Ministry of Social Security. With the arrival of summer and the peak season, Alicante breaks employment records thanks to the service sector.

Of the 7,500 new jobs, around 2,500 are in the commerce sector, while hospitality contributes with nearly 2,200 new workers. Both sectors help offset the decline in education, which, with the start of school holidays, has seen more than 2,000 jobs lost.

As for unemployment, the province continues to decrease, as is usual in these months, closing June with 1,978 fewer unemployed and a total of 118,465 people without work, 6,800 fewer than at the end of June 2024, according to data from the State Public Employment Service (SEPE).

By sector, the service sector continues to be the main driver of the unemployment decline, with 1,639 fewer unemployed, followed by industry, with 209 fewer unemployed than in May, and agriculture and construction, with 64 and 50 fewer unemployed, respectively.

Hiring

Hiring is also increasing in the province to meet the high demand of the most tourist sectors, which in the peak season need to expand their workforce. With nearly 49,300 new contracts, this represents 8,344 more than last May, an increase of 20.38%.

This month, less than half of the contracts were permanent, breaking the majority trend of this type of agreement. About 24,334 were of this type, 2,722 more than in May, almost a 13% increase in permanent hiring. As expected in the peak season and the start of summer, temporary contracts are on the rise, with 24,951 total agreements, 29% more than those recorded in May, according to data published this Tuesday by the SEPE.
