Alicante Port Authority is set to undertake a thorough cleaning of the fishing dock waters, a preliminary step towards the complete renovation and commercial exploitation of the area. The first step will be the regeneration of this part with the introduction of new environmental technologies capable of regenerating the water.
The president of the Port Authority, Luis Rodríguez, has just signed a contract with the Alicante start-up Bioremed Algae, an innovative local company with sustainable marine technology capable of cleaning the waters inside the dock.
The method involves a biofilter based on native Mediterranean algae, designed to remove excess nutrients and heavy metals from port waters while allowing real-time monitoring of water quality.
This technology will begin operating from next March, with an initial duration of 12 months, extendable for an additional year depending on the results obtained. It is expected that this pilot experience will allow the purification and improvement of the quality of more than 30,000 cubic meters of port waters during the first year of operation, contributing to a cleaner and more resilient marine ecosystem.
The concession has been facilitated thanks to Alicante Port Innova, the new association of Alicante port, "whose objective is to consolidate and attract business talent and innovation in the maritime sector," according to sources from the Port Authority.
"This significant milestone is part of Alicante port's sustainable innovation strategy, reinforcing its commitment to environmental protection and the transition towards a blue economy," the same sources explain.
