The Alicante City Council and the Generalitat are set to launch five public housing developments in the city across as many neighbourhoods, totalling 220 homes in addition to the 34 already initiated by the Consell in Rabasa. The Alicante City Council has ceded five municipal plots, and the Generalitat Valenciana will carry out the construction through the Public Protection Housing (VPP) scheme, as part of the Plan Vive.
The municipal plots where the administrations will collaborate to build these new 220 homes are located on Jaume I Avenue and on Padre Arrupe, Banda los Claveles, Médico Ricardo Ferré, and Enfermera Angelina Ceballos streets. The total land valuation where these homes are planned to rise amounts to more than 4.3 million euros.
The Vice President of the Generalitat, Susana Camarero, highlighted that "the city of Alicante is one of the main targets in housing promotion" and will add nearly 450 new public protection homes throughout the legislature. Specifically, these 220 homes are in addition to the 190 awarded in December and the 34 homes on Vasco de Gama Street in the Rabasa neighbourhood, which began construction last April.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, emphasised that "the City Council and the Generalitat are aligned and working together on the fundamental goal for this mandate to promote housing construction in Alicante, with a special focus on protected housing, and these disposals are an important step towards achieving this aim."
Barcala underlined that "the promotion of public protection housing is one of the priorities of the government's housing plan. All urban developments planned in the short and medium term in Alicante include a 40% reservation of buildability for the construction of public protection housing."
Additionally, the City Council is already working on the promotion of 6,000 homes in various sectors during this mandate, of which approximately 2,400 will be protected by reserving 40% in new plans for these urban figures for young people under 35, and adjusting the rent to facilitate access to these properties. In new developments, a new neighbourhood has already been promoted in Albufereta and another in Lomas del Garbinet, in addition to making progress in Central Park.
These are joined by the 15 being promoted by the Municipal Housing Board in 'El Portón' in the Old Town, expected to be completed this summer, another 14 in San Gabriel, and another 32 on Ceuta Street in San Blas, currently in the bidding process.
