Construction works to transform Almadraba Beach into a new green area by the sea in Alicante are progressing well. This was announced by the City Council following a site visit. The works aim to create a natural environment of 25,000 square meters along the city's coast.

It is reported that this transformation of Almadraba Beach will be ready by early 2026. However, with the high season about to begin in Alicante, the City Council indicates that pedestrian access to the beach is expected to open next week.

Thus, locals and tourists will be able to take a dip in Almadraba during Easter and summer while the regeneration works continue. Meanwhile, the City Council highlights that temporary toilets have been installed along this stretch of coast.

Progress of the works at the beach

These works at Almadraba Beach include renaturalizing the area by creating new green zones by the sea, alongside pedestrian paths, a kiosk, and a new municipal building, among other interventions. The municipal investment in these works amounts to 5.1 million euros.

The urbanization project plans various actions to improve mobility, accessibility, and safety features, as well as to enhance the cultural heritage where the La Almadraba-Camping Bahía site is located, which can be explored with identified and explained existing elements.

Additionally, a sustainable drainage system will be created to manage heavy rainfalls, reducing runoff speed and channeling its paths. A 786 m³ cistern will be built to retain rainwater and later release it into the network, along with an open channel to minimize beach washouts and a filtering channel.

Green areas by the sea

The works foresee the landscape restoration and renaturalization of the area to create a "more attractive" space with new vegetation and conservation of existing flora, while modifying the topography to achieve accessible pedestrian routes.

The streets Corbeta and Almadraba will be pedestrianized to enhance the park's character by the sea, maintaining its essence as a natural space equipped with urban furniture, rest areas, children's play areas, foot showers, fountains, bike racks, wooden and concrete walkways, chairs, and benches. The existing sewer will be renewed as part of the project.

The kiosk located in the Public Maritime-Terrestrial Domain will also be relocated to a conditioned green area to activate the generated public space, and the existing emergency services building will be replaced to avoid its current visual impact with a semi-buried structure with a green roof.

A coastal walk along the entire Alicante coast

This initiative represents "the largest investment in coastal strip regeneration within the improvement and integration plan of the coastal front on which the Alicante City Council is working," highlighted Mayor Luis Barcala during a site visit with Urban Planning Councillor Rocío Gómez and European Projects Councillor Antonio Peral.

This coastal front regeneration plan, included in the Alicante 4D city model and the strategic lines of the General Structural Plan, "proposes intervention along the coastline, creating new interaction spaces with the coastal strip, eliminating physical barriers and uses incompatible with the natural environment, which will allow better integration of the city with the coast and improve the area's environmental quality," Barcala noted. The ultimate goal is to achieve a linear coastal walk encompassing the entire Alicante coastline.

More works to improve the coastal front

The Alicante City Council recalls that several improvement works on the coastal front, valued at over 25 million euros, have already been completed or are currently underway. These include, in addition to the reurbanization of the La Almadraba area, the Paseo de los Mártires de la Libertad, the last section of Avenida de Niza, and several improvement works in the La Albufereta-Serra Grossa area.

The reurbanization of the La Almadraba area is included in the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, specifically the Territorial Plan for Sustainable Tourism in Destination, funded by the European Next Generation funds. Specifically, these funds allocate 1,186,825 euros for climate change adaptation actions and 200,000 euros for environmental restoration efforts.

The initiative includes the environmental regeneration of La Almadraba and the creation of new recreational spaces in a 25,000 square meter intervention area. The tourism objectives aim to deconcentrate urban beach flows by offering another place of excellence on a nearby sandy area and adapting the city to climate change.
