The Alicante City Council is set to approve the proposal to name the park located in PAU 5 after businessman Joaquín Rocamora. This park is situated between the Democracy Roundabout and the Avenue of Nations. This decision honors Rocamora, who was the founder of Ineca, president of COEPA and PROVIA, and a key developer and promoter in this expansion area near San Juan Beach.
The central green area of the park, located next to Maestro José Garberí Avenue, has been chosen to bear the name of this influential businessman, as stated by the city council in a press release. Rocamora, born in Daya Nueva in 1939, was a teacher for over fifteen years in various schools across Alicante province before becoming involved in social and business associations focused on water distribution. He then transitioned into the business world, embarking on a successful career as a builder and developer.
The City Council has expressed pride in recognizing a beloved businessman within the sector who has contributed to construction projects across various towns in Alicante, with his latest projects in the PAU-5 expansion area near San Juan Beach. Rocamora also founded the Institute of Economic Studies of Alicante Province (Ineca) and served as president of both the Business Confederation of Alicante Province (COEPA) and the Association of Real Estate Developers of Alicante Province (PROVIA).
Additionally, the City Council plans to approve naming a street currently known as Vistahermosa Official Provisional Street 17 after sportsman Santos Labarca. The professional handball player, born in Guipúzcoa in 1949, has always represented Alicante as a player for Calpisa. He achieved significant accolades including winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, two league championships, three King's Cups, competing in the 1972 Olympics, participating in the 1974 World Championship in East Germany, and winning numerous trophies. After retiring from professional play, he dedicated himself to coaching teams such as Tecnisan and other local teams.
Finally, the council will also approve naming a square in Los Ángeles neighborhood within Campoamor as Plaza del Pueblo Gitano. This gesture recognizes the Roma community, which is Europe's largest ethnic minority. Alicante ranks fifth among Spanish cities with the highest Roma population. The City Council emphasized that "it is essential to raise awareness about the Roma people who have nearly six centuries of history in Spain."
